The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested three suspects allegedly involved in an illegal hawala/ hundi network during a raid in Old Dhoraji Colony, Kara chi East, the agency said on Sunday. According to a spokes person for the agency, the FIA Commercial Banks Circle Karachi conducted the operation on a tip-off on the directives of Karachi Zone FIA Director Muntazar Mehdi. The arrested suspects were identified as Qasim, Amin and Ali. FIA officials also seized Rs150,000 in cash, several cheque books and four mobile phones during the operation. The mobile phones allegedly contained import ant digital evidence related to illegal financial transactions through the hawala/hundi system. Initial investigations suggested that the suspects were involved in transferring money through illegal hawala/ hundi channels, the FIA said. The suspects, along with the recovered cash, documents and digital evidence, were shifted to the FIA Commercial Banks Circle Karachi. A case has been registered and further investigations are under way. The FIA said the scope of the investigation had been expanded to identify other facilitators and key figures allegedly linked to the illegal financial network. Further arrests are expected in the case, the agency said, adding that it would continue its crackdown against illegal hawala/hundi operations, money laundering and other financial crimes to protect the country’s financial system.
