A Solon woman is facing felony charges after police say she stole over $50,000 from Budget car rental in Iowa City by messing with rental records and causing her employer to lose more than $187,000.
Barbara Ray, 51, was arrested Monday and faces charges of theft, fraud, money laundering, and lying about financial transactions.
Investigators say Ray worked as a manager at Budget and changed or erased 466 rental agreements between January 2021 and June 2024 to cover up unauthorized rentals. She is accused of accepting payments directly from customers and having the money sent to her personal accounts, like Cash App and Chime.
Court records show Ray received $50,141.08 in personal payments between January 2023 and June 2024. After getting the money, police say she transferred it to her own bank accounts or used it for herself. In all, she caused the company to lose $187,184.16.
She is being held in the Johnson County Jail on a $40,000 bond.
